Lee had power to do pretty much what he wanted.
There is nothing at all in Lee's writings or action to supoprt any other interpretation that he was as intersted in preserving the domestic institution of the south as anyone was.
Lincoln is lambasted for suggesting the blacks be colonized out of the country (although he later favored them having the rights of citizens) but the slavers are held up as paragons of virtue.
A funny thing strikes me about the way the slave holders are treated on FR by the neo-rebs. It is seldom suggested that the slave holders be considered in the context of their day and excused for their inhuman attitudes on that basis. This exposes the true attitudes of the current day neo-confederates. They feel that there is nothing at all wrong with slavery even today.
They DO feel the need to dance around and euphemize it.
It does explain why they vilify Lincoln and praise Lee.
