An absolute outrage. Robert E. Lee, while a loyal Virginian, who served the Confederacy with distinction was, for his time at least, no racist, and opposed chatel slavery. Lee was clearly a supporter of slavery and class distinction. He couldn't even conceive of a beginning of the end of slavery. President Lincoln could.
