May 13, 2003 -- The top editors at The New York Times yesterday took the blame for failing to oust disgraced reporter Jayson Blair sooner - but staffers said heads should roll and accused the brass of a "whitewash."

"While we deplore Jayson's conduct, we also recognize that, however difficult it may be, it is the responsibility of The Times, its Publisher, its Executive Editor and its Managing Editor to protect that bond of trust and prevent such occurrences or, at the very least, uncover them rapidly," said a memo to employees.

They bend the truth so much that when the truth was finally completely absent they didn't notice - is more like it.

Actually, they bent the truth so much it snapped back and slapped them in the face. Truth'll do that eventually.

I believe the Times does have a Truths section, and from what I understand their section is the largest of any publication in the nation, they actually call it Corrections.

Great line.

I agree with you but then I don't agree with you. I think a degree in journalizm is probably worth about as much as a degree in wombyns studies these days. OTOH, generally people who discount the benefit of college are those who haven't had the experience.

I think educational requirements tend to be an inverse function of necessity, or a requirement of law. In my field, computer technology, a degree was de rigeur when I started in 1981 for any job other than entry level operations or data entry. By 1995 or so, the need for skilled people was such that employers were much more lax about hiring people with degrees - they just needed somebody who could get the job done. A job like MD requires a certain amount of education no matter how badly they are needed.

In journalizm, there is lots of competition for a limited number of jobs. Therefore a degree gives you an edge on those who don't have degrees. Apparently a dark skin is an advantage equivalent to a degree to the NYT.

Finally: CNN and the New York Times have now both admitted publicly that they are corrupt propaganda organs. This needs to never be forgotten. The public must be continually be reminded that they cannot be trusted under their current structures and managements. How can we get this before the public and keep it there?

You're right -- I got my pinches and punches confused. But the story's the same either way.

doesn't that make the NYT a tabloid

Just FYI, a tabloid describes the size of the paper. The NY Post, for example, is a tabloid.

The point of my posting is that the Times crucified some low level employees in Norfolk who may or may not have been involved with pornographic emails. Jayson Blair publishes fiction as news and no manager above him gets axed? Incredulous.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

The NYT seems to be working overtime to discredit this guy. Could it be he was about to break a story about them?

Sorry for you if you think the person with a high school diploma knows everything they need to know.......

You're attributing statements to me that I never made. Something you learned in J School?

Don't confuse my aversion to J School with a general distaste for education (I mean real education, not a degree in BS).
