THE FAMILIES
New Fund to Support Education
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
WASHINGTON, May 11 The Anheuser-Busch Companies have donated $1 million to create a college scholarship fund for dependents of American and British soldiers killed in the war with Iraq.
The creation of the Fallen Heroes Fund was announced in a ceremony on Friday attended by military officials including Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and officials from Anheuser-Busch and the Intrepid Museum Foundation. The foundation raises money for educational and philanthropic programs for the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in Manhattan and will administer the fund.
"This is our way of making a small positive difference in the lives of people who have really given everything that they can for our country," said Patrick Stokes, the president and chief executive of Anheuser-Busch. "They've got a tough life in front of them," Mr. Stokes said in reference to those who have lost relatives in the war.
Bill White, president of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, said the fund would provide scholarships to help offset the cost of higher education for the children and spouses of those who died in the war "as defined by U.S. Central Command."
Since the Intrepid Museum Foundation was created in 1982, it has donated more than $15 million to the families of United States military members killed in the line of duty, according to the foundation.

Good for Anheuser-Busch! I wish more American companies would give to the families of those who've fought in this war or lost loved ones in this war.

I think this is a wonderful idea!! I saw it on their website today. I was checking out the site because hubby had sent me an email of discounts on vacations he received at work. Anheuser-Busch is also offering free one day admission to their theme parks for military members and 4 dependents from Memorial Day weekend to Veteran's Day.

That's great news! I get so weary of hearing about all the bashing against GW. etc., and the boycotts from whatever side of whatever. It's so uplifting to hear about companies HELPING people such as those people who risk so much us by serving in the military. Let's start looking out more for those kind of companies, and give them the free advertising and help expand their consumer base. They would be into that! :)

I read here on FR that the fund was started by Ollie North and Sean joined him in it. I read recently it has collected $500,000 for scholarships.

I heard him talking about it a little today...he was asking for donations and talking about the Freedom Concert he's planning to also help raise the cash. Have you ever heard of the Warrior Foundation? In case you haven't, it is the same type of education fund for the children of special ops troops killed while on a mission or in training. I'm glad to see someone doing this for the children of all soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines that were killed. The children of those brave souls deserve to be able to receive an education too.
