Fla. Man Gets 8 Years For Kicking Police Dog

Posted: 8:35 a.m. EDT May 11, 2003

BRADENTON, Fla. -- A man with a 20-year criminal history will spend another eight years in prison for kicking a police dog. A jury convicted Henry Sailes, 35, of Bradenton of the felony crime of injuring a police dog in February along with a charge of obstructing an officer.

Sailes was wanted on a series of warrants in May 2002 when he ran from police and a Belgian Malinnois named Jake, who caught him. The dog, a breed of shepherd, was not seriously injured.

Judge Rick DeFuria agreed Friday with prosecutors who argued Sailes should be considered a habitual offender because of his criminal past, which includes a 1995 conviction for burglary and trafficking in stolen property. Sailes served five years in prison for that crime.

Sailes testified he kicked the dog because he was scared.

"I'm really sorry for what happened with the dog, really," Sailes said. "The dog wasn't going for my arm or my leg. He was going for my face. I didn't want to do it. I had to do it."

We had a peeping-Tom pervert who was a nasty, no good piece of human refuse. "Speedy," one of malinois's got him good. He fought with Speedy and kicked him a few times. Big mistake. The guy is now sitting in an Ohio prison with his knee nearly torn out. When he gets out he won't be able to run so fast anymore.

In memory of my old partner, K-9 "Nick."

That's because the media doesn't like cops either.

I knew with your screen name you had to be a fellow Ohioan :) - did you see the thread I posted about the 2003 ohio celebration? Turns out ohio is legally only 55 years as a state...

Cap'n Crunch was once a nickname of mine (brielfy) because I liked to hear elbow joints pop and "Crunch" when out of control citizens would attack me on the job.

Judo is great for police work. And, I don't claim to be a tough guy, in fact, I could have also taken the screenname Underdog-"humble and loveable."

I'm feeling better after a second cup of coffee.

:-)

That wasn't your job. It was your job to apprehend, not to punish or to delight in vengeance.

Sure, it's common to take all the charges and combine them. I hope this rat serves every day of his 8 years too.

I wonder what the warrants were for that the media didn't seem important to mention.

I see he's got priors for burglary and what else was it? recieving stolen property?

He's a rat.

LOL, sorry, I like to go home to my family. Ever been in a battle where someone is trying to take your gun? Would you pop an elbow to get their attention?

Ever get sucker punched and attacked? How about kicked in the face? How about a blanket thrown into your face and attacked?

I could go on but I think you get the idea. I only popped the elbows of those who were truly deserving and in the heat of battle. And, I guess I can't lie, when that elbow was popping and the battle ended, I was happy.

Maybe I've had too much coffee today.

I disagree-- that is equivalent to assault on a cop.

The guy deserves the 8 years!

Quit joking.

I did see that thread, interesting. Kind of neat. Maybe we could succeed. Or at least get rid of Voinovich, Kucinich, Taft...man there are too many to list.

Why would trials for the warrants not take precedence over this? Could it be... that the warrants were for offenses against CIVILIANS?

So, basically what you are saying is, a cop is not better than a dog. Right?

And that is just the problem with police today. They mistake justified force for deserved punishment. Punishment is the job of the courts.

It ought to be something akin to destruction of government property. Not the act of lese majesty it is made out to be today.
