Silicon Valley technology stocks, the source of much pain for investors during the past three years, finally may be breaking out of their slump and rising fast enough to spark the sluggish tech economy back to life.

It is interesting that two of the biggest tech/business stories this week were 1) spam and 2) illegal downloading.

Each of these has titanic repurcussions for the continued growth of tech. The first must be eliminated or contained, if the internet world is to keep growing. The second must be dealt with in a realistic way---it isn't going away, and all that can be done now is to find a way to make LEGAL downloading more desirable and, at the same time, "tax" the end users the way the movie industry did with blank VCR tapes.

Each of these is crucial to a further tech boom, and I'm confident that to some extent each will be dealt with.
