Republican gubernatorial candidate Haley Barbour pumped more than $2 million into his coffer this year, compared with the $837,696 raised by Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, according to campaign finance reports filed Friday.

Musgrove, who is seeking a second term, was outpaced by Barbour in total funds, with Barbour raising $2.4 million to Musgrove's $2.3 million.

I am a conservative and a Mississippian, but we need a better candidate. Barbour slurs his speech and does not make a good appearance. His image would be a negative for a state already fraught with ridicule and stereotyping of being slow and backward. I wish Trent Lott would have ran or someone with the polish of a Chip Pickering.

While I live in Oregon, now, I was born and raised in Meridian, and my family still lives there.

Haley may, or may not, make a good candidate on the national level, but I think he will be a great candidate for Governor. I believe he has more savvy than you think, and he knows very influential people, from all spectrums, from all over the country. After his success as the Chairman of the Republican Party, I doubt they perceive him to be backward or slow.

I like Chip, and Thad Cochran---they both exude class and polish. Nationally, and just for the moment, Trent is damaged goods. He will weather this, but it will take some time. IOW, now may not be a good time for him to be a candidate in any election.

It's nice to meet you. I always enjoy meeting Freepers from Mississippi, where my heart is.;o)

I so hope Haley can take the Republican Party in Mississippi to the promised land. This could be a break through year for the Mississippi GOP like the one Georgia recently had. I think we can pick up the State Senate, Governor, State Treasurer, Attorney General, and keep the Lt. Governor.

"I am a conservative and a Mississippian, but we need a better candidate."

Hmm...

"Barbour slurs his speech and does not make a good appearance."

I think Mississippians appreciate non-slick candidates. I think Haley is a great guy and does cut a good appearance.

"His image would be a negative for a state already fraught with ridicule and stereotyping of being slow and backward."

I suggest ignoring the leftist media attacks that are often inherently viciously anti-Southern. We don't elect candidates to appease them. If we did, you'd have Bill Clinton as our party nominee.

"I wish Trent Lott would have ran or someone with the polish of a Chip Pickering."

Haley has worked hard for years for the party, he deserves the honor to serve as Governor of Mississippi. He'll do a great job.
