It happens when you step off that plane in some -- let's say -- "differently evolved" part of the country and don't see a single ethnic person for four days...

It's interesting how important this is to some people. I work with a very sweet young Vietnamese-American woman who is convinced that if she travels very far outside the Bay Area she is going to be attacked and killed by rural white Klan-types. I told her that if she is going to suffer any racial violence in her life, it will be in her own South Berkeley neighborhood and it won't be white people who do it. I don't think she was convinced. This is one of the ways Democrats keep such an iron grip on minority voters - they spread myths about how horrible the "white Republican" world is outside the little bubble they live in.

You know, it's funny the people that feel afraid apart from their urban prisons havens. Inconceivable to me. Those are the only places I really feel afraid. I have traveled the highways of this country often alone and often at night and the only thing that has ever made me afraid was the occasional inexpected onslaught of bad weather. But when I get into an urban jungle, encompassed on all sides by traffic and people and everything is all chaotic and disjointed, at the very least I am in a state of generalized anxiety and at worst the stress compels me to seek any possible means of escape.

I fear robbery and street-crime in Berkeley more than any place else. If I get a flat tire in the middle of Arkansas, I know that the person who stops is going to help me out, not steal my wallet for crank money and try to rape me, unlike Berkeley.

Why is it that the only places you want to be armed are the places where you can't be armed?
