The World Health Organization today sharply raised its estimate of the SARS death rate to 14-15 percent. The disease is much worse for people older than 65, with more than half likely to die.

Well, something has to be done to rescue the Social Security system. As Dick Lamm said, old people have a duty to die.

I saw stats today for one of the infected countries where the mortality rate for someone under 25 was on the order of 1%!

I swear, you people have lost ALL perspective.

I'm really tiring of the totally unsubstantiated allegations that SARS is a bioweapon, or conversely, that it's a fraud and hype to increase the power of the World Health Organization.

It's a new virus, like millions before it, that has made its arrival on the planet. It's serious, but not an immediate danger to America.

It bears watching and it may become a threat to us, but we're doing everything within reason to prevent that. We don't know yet whether those efforts will be successful, which makes it an interesting story to follow.

I wouldn't make a vacation to China this year, but even there, more than 99% of the residents have not been exposed. Freaking out over this today is not justified. Wondering whether it might be justified in the future is reasonable.

Understanding the difference is imperative.
