I don't understand why Bush says anything about the AW ban since he only risks alienating people. Why come down on either side if you probably won't see a bill about it anyway?

I don't understand why Bush says anything about the AW ban since he only risks alienating people. Why come down on either side if you probably won't see a bill about it anyway? 1. Bush is keeping a campaign pledge.
2. Bush gets to play moderate, knowing that a Republican Congress will strangle this baby in its crib.
I heard the same outrage when Bush signed campaign finance reform. Is anybody going to vote against Bush because he signed a law that's been basically gutted, and he knew it would be?
This is politics, not ideology.

Most here still think he never said that.

For Bush, confronting the NRA sounds like a risky political move. The group has given more than $5 million to Republicans since Bush took officeWhat's the big deal?
The American people have been screaming for immigration reform and begging Bush to stop the never ending invasion of our borders, and this epic attack on our sovereignty, and he has basically told all to go to hell.

Why can't anyone see what this is for what it is?
Bush personally probably doesn't give a whit either way about this.
Bush has been informed that the ban won't make it thru congress.
Political capital is earned by supporting the ban. There will be any number of centrists that will vote Bush because he supported this noise.
I'm not a Bush supporter at all costs person. Bush's agenda is blatent here. He's simply playing the game here. He _KNOWS_ that he can support the continued ban since it won't pass. Win-win. He wins the "super patriots" and he wins the moderates who don't care and he wins the lefties who support the ban.

I have decided that I am NOT voteing for Bush in the next election based on his attack on my 2nd Ammendment Rights. Even if the ban does not pass, I cannot bring myself to vote for someone who wants to ban Homeland Defense Rifles.
As I have stated before, I will vote straight Demo if the ban goes through and then never vote Repub again.
I will also actively encourage everyone I know at the shooting range to do the same. Bush should retire a war hero after one term. His attack on gun owners is such a stab in the back.
