It sounds like these *INTELLIGENT* people *DESIGNED* themselves a really nice experiment in a tightly controlled environment. I usually don't get involved in these threads, but that was my first thought. From a distant lens, they've done the following:
1. Created the world.
2. Created the rules.
3. Created the initial organisms.
4. Kickstarted execution.
5. Prompted evolution by introducing mutation external to the organisms.
6. Set the organisms loose on each other.
I played this game in the early '90's - it was called Unnatural Selection. Cool game.
