Now, now. Let's not bash the old Wizard too hard here. It was just too much for him to take. President Bush, in flight gear, looking GOOD, being loved and adored by all those military people, having defeated a Nazi/Stalinist regime, and landing on a carrier with the Namesake of the President who freed black people. It was too much for his already frazzled synapses and he went into meltdown.

I don't believe Senator Byrd ever attained the rank of "Wizard". I'm not even sure if he became an "Exalted Cyclops".
