OSLO (Reuters) - A Norwegian parliamentarian nominated President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair for the Nobel Peace Prize on Thursday, praising them for winning the war in Iraq.
'Sometimes it's necessary to use a small and effective war to prevent a much more dangerous war in the future,' Jan Simonsen, a right-wing independent in Norway's parliament, told Reuters.
At the 1984 Republican National Convention, Jeane Kirkpatrick, then the Reagan administration's U.N. delegate, gave a speech on foreign policy that has stuck with me. She blasted the Democratic Party's approach to foreign affairs, repeating the phrase "the blame America first crowd." I hated the speech at the time, but have recently reread it. It has aged better than I have.Kirkpatrick was Right
U.S., Britain Push Postwar Iraq Setup
UNITED NATIONS - The United States and Britain are seeking U.N. approval to run Iraq for at least a year in an American proposal that also limits the United Nations' role in the country, council diplomats said Thursday.
The long-awaited U.S. draft resolution, to be introduced at the U.N. Security Council on Friday, outlines a U.S. vision for postwar Iraq sharply at odds with that of several Security Council members, particularly Russia.
BEIRUT, Lebanon - The Hezbollah leader said Thursday his guerrilla organization which fought Israeli forces to a standoff in southern Lebanon might join Iraqis if they decide to launch an insurgency against U.S. forces.
"It is a matter first for the Iraqi people to decide," Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said on the Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera.
ALLUJAH, Iraq -- Abraham Ghanan's body is stunted by malnutrition -- a 16-year-old whose sallow frame is fit for a boy of 10 -- but he keeps his arms strong, he says, in hopes of throwing grenades with perfect aim someday.
''I eat in the morning, a little in the day, not at night,'' Ghanan said, standing outside a US Army outpost in this city's center. ''But I have strength to kill. We want to put bombs on our body, to make a suicide operation to show we are not down.''
''These soldiers, they are the sons of George Bush,'' adds Omar Nizar, a reed-thin, barefoot 14-year-old. ''We will fight them.''
1,500 Spanish Troops To Aid Iraq Recovery
No Combat Role Allowed, Aznar Says
Spain has agreed to send as many as 1,500 troops to participate in a postwar stabilization force in Iraq, but has barred them from any combat missions, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar said yesterday.
"We're still in the discussion phase" of a mission for the troops, Aznar said in an interview at Blair House, where he is staying during a Washington visit. He said that he anticipated the Spanish force would be working on reconstruction and stability tasks, but that their mandate included "no combat missions."
