After a felon has completed all of their sentence, including any parole period, then I think that their suffrage is still lost as well as their firearm rights. There are also other prohibitions - some states prevent them from holding elective office, for example.

I don't believe that felons ought to automatically recover their civil rights. I do believe that they ought to have the opportunity, after a period of time (say 20 years) of squeaky-clean living in society, to have judicial review of that loss.

I agree with you that violent firearms crimes ought to have long certain prison terms.
