Maybe this is a North-South cultural kind of thing...but I have to say I was pretty shocked reading that
last year was the
first time this
PUBLIC high school had had an integrated prom.
Sorry, but it sounds like something out of the twilight zone.

the actual prom *was* integrated again this year. This 'segregated prom' was a private party separate from the prom. We'll see how Bill and Neal 'listen' to each other. FWIW, my wife grew up in a midwestern town that crowned a white king and queen and a black king and queen, and so on down the homecoming court as well. <> The school was afraid that due to the numbers in the school, only white kids would ever get voted to the throne.

It's a rural/ poor/ class kinda thing. Not a Southern thing.
We have our share of bigoted rednecks here in the South for sure, and folks in the North love to wag fingers at them.
I would tell you that the most bigoted people I ever mey lived in the Boston area and in the suburbs of NYC. (used to live there).
