Jennings Showcases Liberal Shots at Bush's Carrier Landing
Media Research Center ^ | May 7, 2003 | Brent Baker

Posted on 05/07/2003 10:21:35 AM PDT by PJ-Comix

Party pooper. ABC's Peter Jennings on Tuesday night found time to relay the complaints from two liberal Democrats about President Bush's landing on an aircraft carrier last week, with Congressman Henry Waxman wanting to know the cost and former Klansman turned Senator Robert Byrd claiming it was an "affront to the Americans killed or injured in Iraq for the President to exploit the trappings of war for the momentary spectacle of a speech."

On the May 6 World News Tonight, Jennings intoned: "The President's visit to the Abraham Lincoln was, among other things, a powerful photo opportunity and two leading Democrats are now criticizing it. California Congressman Henry Waxman is asking government auditors to figure out how much the trip cost the taxpayers and West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd said on the Senate floor today it was an 'affront to the Americans killed or injured in Iraq for the President to exploit the trappings of war for the momentary spectacle of a speech.'"

Wednesday morning on NBC's Today, in one of a series of unchallenging questions to Democratic presidential candidate Bob Graham, Katie Couric asked him whether he agreed with Byrd's attack.

Anybody else catch this last night? What surprised me is that Petah stuck this report right toward the beginning of the ABC World News Tonight broadcast. He just couldn't wait to get his licks in.

This was just reported on Fox News and the dems are ramping up to be outraged over this whole episode as being a political photo op. We need to let them know in no uncertain terms that whe the Pres did was to honor the troops and we will not let them tarnish it with their ugly accusations.

Yes, Petah plays a central role in shaping the script he reads. A former ABC reporter, Peter Collins, was on MSNBC yesterday talking about Petah's biased "news" content.

Who cares if it was a photo-op? Everytime the President goes out in public, it's a photo-op. The Rats are just upset that it was such a successful photo-op, but they're not changing anyone's minds. Personally, I think it's cool that our Commander in Chief knows how to fly a jet, and I'm sure the servicemen aboard the ship thought so too.

"Does peter jennings decide which stories he will read?"

He is the Managing Editor of the evening news show, so he decides which stories get covered, which stories don't, and how each story that runs WILL be covered. He instructs each reporter who is to file a segment how he expects the piece to be structured and what emphasis it should carry.

If something happens at the White House, for example, he'll tell John McWethy to give him 90 seconds with the emphasis on what critics are saying. If Bush proposes tax cuts, he'll tell some other reporter to "find me an ordinary Joe who won't benefit from them."

He's very hands-on...every story is dictated out in advance and it's up to the reporter to fill in the blanks in the template Petah gives them.
