There is a high probability that this was not a publicity stunt. JK Rowling doesn't need the money, nor the publicity to sell anything related to Harry Potter. I heard something about her Harry Potter books now holding a world record in sales.

This sounds like any other nefarious theft. Someone wanted to make a lot of money and stole hoping to do so.

Rowling needs a publicity stunt to sell HP books like the Beatles needed to fake Paul's death to sell albums...

No publicity stunt is needed. the book has been number one at Amazon for two months already. The author has 450 million dollars squirreled away, according to Entertainment Weekly, and her only problem is finding a motive to finish the series.
