[history]
ALAMEDA -- Just a stone's throw from Encinal High School on this island town's western end sits the once-bustling but now-shuttered Alameda Naval Air Station. The proximity is not merely physical: The school's athletic teams are the Jets, its newspaper is the Jet Blast, and its mascot is a smiling cartoon plane. But the harmony between school and armed services is under strain now as a small group of Encinal's teachers and parents attempts to bar the return of a retired Marine Corps jet to a display on the school's front yard.

They can put it in my back yard. My kids would love it. Besides, I am proud of the USMC and their accomplishments.

If these stupid, whiney, mealy-mouthed pissants don't want it, I'll take it.

David Olstad, a volunteer who assists on technical support issues at the school, said, "I'd just as soon see a .357 Magnum blown up and put on a pedestal. I mean, there's no difference to me. It's glorifying violence."
Why not just put up a swastika, David?
Thats what a lack of firearms and airpower would have bought you, you fey twit.

Can we give conservatives a year to get out of California, then give it to Mexico? It's amazing how different the attitudes there are from the rest of the country (except the Eastern seaboard).

From 1985 to 1986 I was stationed aboard USS ENTERPRISE, which was homeported at Alameda at the time. It's a shame to watch these ingrates tear at everything that doesn't fit in with their milktoast, kum-bah-yah view of the world. Without the money the men and women of that Naval Station provided over the years (in the form of purchasing power, sales tax revenues, and the many businesses that served the base) their town wouldn't have half the stuff it has today.
Pathetic.

"Students have been coming up to me asking when is it going to come back, not to not bring it back," he said... First thing I'd ask was "What are their names? How many? When did they tell you?"
I bet he'd have stumbled and said he forgot their names or that they wanted to remain anonymous.

This kind of crap has been happening for some time now.
I was a Columbine "Rebel" back in the 1980s. Our mascot was a revolutionary minuteman with a rifle. One of the graduating classes during the 1970s constructed a 10' high metal statue of a rifle-bearing colonialist with a three-pointed hat and erected it in front of the school. It stood there for years before disappearing sometime in the 1990s (before Columbine became infamous).
I have no doubt it was removed for PC reasons and it certainly will never return. Several ninnies even urged Columbine to drop its "Rebel" mascot altogether for something more peaceful.

Glad I don't live in Alameda anymore. The City Council needs a good freeping, though - not to mention those teachers at Encinal High. By the way, I graduated from Alameda High School, the better one! (Never you mind the year.) For victory & freedom!!!

"I would think there is a better symbol for the school, something that might reflect education and intelligence," she said. How about the "Bread Slices?" But, wait. Slice=knife=VIOLENCE!

"The parents of our Vietnamese and Cambodian and Afghan kids especially ... have been affected by the tragedies of war, and I think we shouldn't say that that's insignificant or somehow not important."
Perhaps she shouldn't presume to speak for those Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Afghan parents. How dis-empowering of her.

At least the mascot wasn't named for an ethnic group. Eventually, all mascots will be outlawed completely, as PC dictates. The banana slug mascot at UC Santa Cruz should be next, as they are prone to fizz when doused with salt.

Jets should avoid flak!!!
(sheesh! i thought somebody would have said that by now)
Best way to avoid flak is to bomb the source!
