May 4, 2003 -- HOW fitting that Jesse Jackson has subjected NASCAR to his unique brand of activism. Like so much of Jackson's world, car racing involves noise, smoke and spinning in circles while ultimately going nowhere. Meanwhile, poor blacks in the bleachers wonder how this helps them.

What a rogue this Jackson is.
If he can extort money from NASCAR because they don't have a proportional number of white drivers, what's to be done about the reverse, for instance in the NBA? I can't believe corporate America is so limp wristed, when this scammer calls.

Maybe if we get enough honest judges (Republicans) on the bench, Jackson would not get away with this. I know it would cost a company millions to defend themselves against his claims, but I sure would like to see one of them stand up to him.

I don't see why Nascar has to pay him anything. Nascar has worked hard and gotten several african american owners involved in the sport. The hope was that they would get african american drivers and thus open a new revenue stream from african americans in regards to merchandise, ratings, etc. The african american owners initially talked of bringing in drivers, but once they saw the huge amounts of money they could make, opted for experience over new drivers (who would have been black). Those african american owners certainly wouldn't want jesse rocking the boat. They should stand up to him.

Wendell Scott and Willy T. Ribbs both raced in NASCAR. They didn't last real long. It takes both talent and money both. No matter how hard Jesse shakes the money tree, it these, and not race, that's a factor.
