Fifteen wounded in Indian Kashmir grenade attack

SRINAGAR, India, May 3 (Reuters) - At least 15 people were wounded in Indian Kashmir on Saturday when a grenade thrown by suspected Muslim rebels at a police patrol exploded on a road near a crowded marketplace, officials said.

"The grenade missed the target and exploded on the road injuring 15 civilians, four of them seriously," a police official told Reuters.

They attack took place in Anantnag town south of Srinagar, the summer capital of India's Jammu and Kashmir state.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and sending militants to fight in Indian Kashmir. Pakistan denies giving material help to the rebels but says it offers political support to what it calls a legitimate struggle for freedom by the people of Kashmir.

The nuclear-armed rivals have toned down their rhetoric in recent days and are seen to be moving towards dialogue after Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee urged talks to resolve the decades-old Kashmir dispute.

The two countries have fought three wars since 1947, two of them over Kashmir, and they were on the brink of another conflict last year over the Himalayan region.
