Bay Area pitch Bush tells defense workers tax cuts needed to increase jobs

Sharing the stage with a high-tech armored vehicle, President Bush took aim at the recession Friday before an audience of defense workers in Santa Clara, imploring Congress to pass "a bold economic recovery package so people can find work."

"The unemployment number is now at 6 percent," Bush said, citing new jobless figures in his speech before 1,800 people at United Defense, the Santa Clara developer of the Bradley fighting vehicle. "(That) number should say loud and clear to members of both political parties in the United States Congress, we need robust tax relief."
