The impulse to help out the poor and the unsuccessful has nothing to do with Darwin, and it is nowhere to be found in the theory of evolution. But there most definitely is a doctrine that does indeed teach that the poor and the unsuccessful should be helped. A doctrine that has, many times in the past, led its followers into living a communal life. A doctrine that even today often exhibits hostility to wealth. Can you guess that that doctrine is? Hint -- it's not evolution.
Pick up a Bible and read proverbs. Christianity's only suggestion is to help Widows, Orphans and Invalids, whose dignity will not be tainted by taking an extended hand out.
All other individuals must work or not eat, consider the ant, do not be a drunkard, do not be lazy...
Individual responsibility is clearly the major theme of the Bible, and the founding fathers picked up on that theme. In other words get off the government/church assistance program or face the consequences. A Christian concept institutionalized. Many Catholics like Chris Matthews, the Pope, the Kennedys have a "help the poor" attitude, that have transformed the north east into a welfare haven.
Your perception of Christianity has been addled by a liberal segment of the Church. Jesus didn't have a place to lay his head, but His hard working, financially well off friends were able to put him up and feed Him (To whom he brought great wisdom, and healing, of which was clearly exhausting work). It's the pursuit of riches (Greed) that you refer to, not hostility to wealth.
P.S. Individual accountability and a personal relationship with Jesus is also critical to one's extended future (eternity).
