No, they're racists because they're racists, not because they live in Georgia. There are racists living everywhere. I know people who live in Georgia who aren't racists. I also know people in Georgia who are racists.

The folks being described in this story are racists, pure and simple. That's their right, of course, but that's what they are.

Nope. The racists are the ones who want to have their own little prom without blacks being able to attend. There's no black fraternity in this story. There's another prom, where everyone's invited, but no black fraternity.

Do I think that a black fraternity that doesn't allow non-black members is racist? Yes, I do. I don't like racism. I don't like racists. I consider racists to be below the scum of the earth. Does that answer your question?

Wrong. It may have a perfect right to restrict membership to a certain race, but that does not mean it is not racist.

Any organization that restricts membership based on race is racist. It may not be illegal, but racist it is. I don't like racists. I support their right to be racists in private organizations, but I do not like them. I will not give any support to any racist organization. I will not buy products from any racist business.

Private organizations may do as they please. That does not mean they are right to do so.

I don't think exclusion is a good thing personally but why is it that it's always White People who should make an effort to be inclusive? Why are White People always supposed to feel ashamed for being White?

I don't understand why this is upsetting to Freepers. Didn't we just decide that it was okay to keep women out of golf clubs? By the same reasoning it's okay to keep blacks out of proms. Where's Hootie? He'll explain it all.

This is not a valid comparison.

The question is not whether they have the right to discriminate (both do) but whether the discrimination is such a terrible thing. Racial segregation is much worse than gender separation. In fact, women are allowed to play at Augusta if they're invited by a member, just not to be members of the club. If Augusta did not want to allow blacks to become members, FReepers would be up in arms about it. Whether they have a right to do something like be a whites-only club is not the same as whether they are morally right. If the kids wanted to hold single-gender proms (a guys' prom and a girls' prom) FReepers would not blink an eyeball.

Discrimination on the basis of race and discrimination on the basis of gender are two very different things. Don't try to equate them, because it just doesn't work.

White People (if you insist on the capitalization) in this instance are not being asked to "make an effort to be inclusive"--they are being asked to NOT make an effort to be exclusive! These White People are going out of their way to make black kids feel bad, of course we will blame them in this instance.
