If I recall correctly, they got the C 130 off the carrier using JATOs. It was a test to determine if carriers could be re-supplied with C130's. I guess the pucker factor was too high.

Spoke too soon.

The C130's trials involved multiple unassisted take offs and landings (non-arrested).
