The 835 is a 12 gauge shotgun that wild turkeys and politicians don't like much. It shoots 2 3/4, 3, and 3 1/2 inch shells.

It's also a good self-defense gun (if I have room). Since I took out 1/2 of the trunk of a small tree once with it, I don't think too much gets up from it. It is a bit of a shoulderbreaker at first, but I'm used to it.

The 1911 is a nice pistol. I have a Rock Island which is more inexpensive than your Colt or Springfield, but it's accurate and does the job well.

"It's also a good self-defense gun"

It's always been my contention that the best home self-defense weapon is a twelve gauge with double "0"s, and I've never seen anything that would make me change my mind.
It will open doors and walls without the need to find out who or what is behind them.
It sounds more exotic to say that you plugged an intruder with your handgun with three shots between the eyes, but with a twelve gauge and double "0"s he won't have any eyes left or a place to put them.
I've been looking at a sawed off ten gauge auto for that purpose.
