A few factors come to mind. One, is the impact of the broken familes on boys. Most single parent families are headed by women, so boys growing up often do not have a father figure to look up to. Another factor is while jobs strictly listed as blue collar are on the decline, many of the jobs listed as service industry jobs are blue collar in nature, such as HV-AC technicians, truck drivers, various maintaience workers, welders and these jobs can pay fairly well, often more than $50K a year with some senority.

As for the fact a majority of people in universities are women, one has to look where many of the females are. They tend to be majors in liberal arts of English, when it comes to technical degrees, except for medical, those feilds are still dominated by males.

A liberal arts degree is fine but it doesn't buy you much ... many skilled tradesmen (without a degree) will earn far more in their lifetime than a run of the mill college graduate. You may have read the book "The Millionaire Next Door" many of those millionaires have never set foot on a college campus.

Hoo boy...let me gush about my college time. I did get lousy grades because of my poor attitudes and because I refused to gush about how great homosexuality was. Add to that the forced class titled "Marxist Theory: Thought and Reasoning" which was mandatory for my major(English Language Literature. When people describe universities as cesspools of liberal thought, there should be a picture of my alma mater for reference.

And sure, more women on campus sounds like a good thing, till you realize they are more like Chelsea Clinton than Jenna Bush, and far more likely to be same sex oriented.

I think you are correct, with the economic trends the way they are a male can find ways to 40k (possibly working tow jobs) which doesn't leave much time for college.

And the secret is, unless you are going into a techincal profession clooege really won't help your earning power that much.
