DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa State basketball coach Larry Eustachy was suspended Wednesday after acknowledging he is an alcoholic, and the athletic director urged the school to fire him.

Three hours after Eustachy said he has sought treatment but will not resign, athletic director Bruce Van De Velde held a news conference of his own to announce that Eustachy would be suspended with pay and should be replaced.

Eustachy has five days to appeal to the president's office.

Van De Velde said Eustachy was informed of the recommendation to fire the coach at 11:30 a.m. ET Wednesday, so that Eustachy knew the recommendation when he held his news conference to admit he was an alcoholic at 2 p.m. ET.

I guess the feminist sexual-harassment orthodoxy is winning out over the alcoholism-is-an-uncontrollable-disease orthodoxy.

Iowa State also had an assistant basketball coach on Eustachy's staff get arrested on child porn charges about 4 months ago. Sheesh!

This is an excuse to get out of a lengthy and costly contract with Eustachy who has turned in lousy performances as coach in the last 2 years.

(With apologies to Yakov Smirnoff) - What a country!

Yes, we live in a wonderful country – a country where a college basketball coach is held to a higher standard of personal behavior than a President of the United States – and the state’s leading newspaper leading the charge against the basketball coach thought nothing of a President committing adultery and perjury while in office. What a country, indeed.

I couldn't have phrased it better.

While behavior of this nature is not an Impeachable offense, it most certainly is grounds for dismissal.

The Des Moines Red Star will forever hold it's friends to lower standards than the rest of the world.
