U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has been visting Iraq this Wednesday. Following a stop in the southern city of Basra, Rumsfeld moved onto the capital, Baghdad. He met with the U.S. appointed administrator for Iraq, Jay Garner. Later, he spoke to U.S. soldiers at Baghdad's airport. Asked about rumours that Washington was planning to pull troops out of Germany, Rumsfeld indicated that the rumours were true, but that the details had not yet been worked out. Those comments came one day after Rumsfeld announced that U.S. troops were pulling out of Saudi Arabia.

Good. We'll need them for North Korea and Iran.

I heard him say it this morning on CSPAN. Though we'll likely be going back within a generation to fight resurgent nazis or islamists.

I'll be watching for more confirmation. But I think we were all expecting it. I think many of our troops won't return there, especially the ones who are single. The ones who have families there will return for a while at least.
I expect it will be about 6-12 months before we know what Rumsfeld is up to.
I wonder if Mr. Scrhoeder is still so happy he decided to be a Weasel. It distracted the Germans for a short time but it actually only brought Gerhard even more problems. All the ones he already had plus the economic hit of losing American bases, the possible cooling relationship with the entire U.S. defense establishment, a more direct competition between American arms and Weasel arms on the world market. The list is pretty long.
I can't believe the Weasels were so stupid to think that they would get W. to back down on Iraq. Idiots.
This ties in nicely with Powell punishing Chile, Thailand and Indonesia while rewarding Singapore a few days ago. With them, it was granting or withholding free trade agreements, all announced at the formation of a new Asian council which looks to tie the ASEAN defense pact into economic terms, initially aimed at North Korea and ultimately at China.
Team Bush: takin' names and kickin' butt.

What an incredible shake-up in the "world order" we have witnessed in the last year.

I'd like to see this report substantiated, but it looks like W is on a mission.
Can't help but wonder what is in store for Russia.

I was wondering why the media here hasn't picked up on this yet. I hope this is true.

Dancing a jig on NATO's grave right now!!! (Actually a NATO flag I printed off the internet).
A thank you to 79 days of Serb resistance that provided the mortal death blow to the NATO beast.

Well, so that is why the Germans and the French are getting together to build a new Army!I saaw a couple of articles about that yesterday. Had me chuckling most of the day, especially one that said Belgium was the driving force behind the effort.

I never said he was, and I've always maintained the alternative was far worse.
My beefs w/ Bush had to do with domestic spending in general, education spending in particular.
