Since Mailer likes symbolism, maybe he could explain the phallic and racial significance of stabbing a woman nearly to death (his second wife who was black) and leaving her for 3 hours before taking her to a hospital.

If the war was designed to satisfu white male's need to feel in charge, then why was a black man chosen to be the main Pentagon spokesman? Wouldn't that choice of itself almost completely wipe out the reason for the war in the first place?
