"What about domestic partnerships for unmarried straight couples? "

those actually exist in some states. The difference between that couple and a gay couple is, the het couple has the option to marry any time they want. Heck, 2 complete het strangers can meet up and get married in vegas by an asian elvis impersonator at a quicky wedding chapel and it's all perfectly legal under the law. If monogomous gay couples wish to have a legal union under the law, why do we want to stop that? In effect we are saying, no, stay single and continuing dating.. don't settle down.. ever! I really don't get the anti-gay lobby.
