Yeah he was... another story is related of Tesla's good friend Mark Twain, a regular visitor to the laboratory, standing on the vibrating platform to his great surprise and pleasure, extoling its theraputic effects while repeatedly ignoring the inventor's warnings to get down. Before long, he was made aware of its laxative effects and ran stiffly to the water closet...

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA A Genius AND a Practical Joker... ROTFL....

Interesting article but the pix look more like "Van De Graff Generators" to me.
Very similiar in effect tho...
Someone correct me if I am wrong, been a few years since I studied them.

I found and borrowed and watched that PBS video on Tesla from our local public library when my husband was asking about him.

Although the format looks similar, the dead give-away is the large primary coil visible through the plastic base. Its a Tesla Coil.

Actually, perp motion machines wouldn't break any laws. The law of the conservation of energy talks about a closed system. One of the recurring ideas for a PM machine is the imbalanced wheel with moveable weights that keep throwing one side off balance and keep the wheel spinning. (The first mad scientist to come up with this idea was a man named Orffyreus who claimed to have developed such a thing in the early 1700's. It was examined by Isaac Newton, who could find no trickery about it.) These wheels, if at all possible, would not violate the law of the conservation of energy since they are not operating in a closed system, afterall, they are using gravity which permeates everywhere.

The 'oh aren't they' was meant as a joke about perpetual motion machines not being possibe. But Tesla claimed that real power gains were possible, and that the resonance of the coil itself would do this. It is true that Tesla was also a bit boastful, it was one of his strengths/weaknesses, maybe this is another example?

Worth watching. I made the suggestion about the possibility of finding it in the public library so that those reading this thread might want to go that route first, before buying it.

Or the time he hooked a small resonant vibrator to the girders of an under-construction high rise and almost shook the thing to pieces...

Actually, perp motion machines wouldn't break any laws.

How about the laws of entropy? Every conversion of energy from one form to another is lossy... nothing we have yet observed exhibits 100% efficiency.

These wheels, if at all possible, would not violate the law of the conservation of energy since they are not operating in a closed system, afterall, they are using gravity which permeates everywhere.

This ignores the not inconsiderable force applied to the system by friction. By your argument, a windmill can be considered a "perpetual motion machine" because it utilizes a force which (like gravity) comes from outside the system.

One thing definitely addressed in the video was the AC/DC "race" between Tesla/Westinghouse and Edison to light up the World's Fair.

More here on this video:

Tesla - War of the Currents

"Court of Honor" at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893.
The age of light that Tesla did so much to bring about was exemplified in this scene. At nightfall, "stopper" (or Sawyer-Man) lamps by Westinghouse provided the most spectacular lighting display the world had ever seen.

Actually, the windmill would be an example, I guess. As would solar panels, and water turbines running from a moving river. These would be examples of external forces entering the not-closed system. So maybe the off-center wheel might really work?

Oh, I just thought of another law that would probably be broken by a PerpMotMAch... IRS regulations.
