Radar interferometry can be used to measure the strain released by earthquakes; it may possible to be able to measure strain build-up prior to earthquakes.

Correction to bonus image note: the volcano is in the Kuril Island chain, south of the Kamchatka Peninsula, considerably east of Sakhalin Island.
