The North GA gold fields were among the largest in the US .... Pre-1849 at least, but they were worked from the very early 1800's.
You can still go up that area and pan if you like.

I'm in Kennesaw, and already up at the computer when I felt the rumble, but it was strong enough to wake up my sound sleeping husband.
Evidently we are on the New Madras fault....the earthquake was centered in North west Alabama...4.0 on the scale...Fort Paine Al area

I've never, before, heard that. More proof that a public school educator must be forced to teach the truth.
In this part of the world the only participants in "panning for gold" were in exteme southern MO and northern AR.

Next time you are in downtown Atlanta, hmmmmm, look at the dome of the capital building. All that glitter up there is Dalonega gold - They have to replenish it every once in a while, but it all comes from GA.
