If you are getting that type of popup you should consider aquiring a router/firewall. If you already have one I would suggest locking it down tighter. As for the popups I believe they are setting timers using java script or popping the ads on the close window event.

On a side note, check this often as patches seem to change it back to "enabled". ;-)

Thanks for the link to tech tv. I have had the annoying popups and I have followed the instructions given. Hoping this clears up the problem. Watch tech tv every now and again, they offer good tips on the show.
