At one time I used Adaware, but several months ago they stopped updating it in order to work on a completely new version, so it could not detect the more recently developed spyware. Did they complete the new version?

I moved to Spybot when I found out they were not updating, and Spybot found a lot of spyware that Adaware missed. Plus, Spybot has some other nice capabilities.

Do you buy Spybot or is it a freeware?

Yes. And they update detection files regularly - I've updated mine twice this week.
