BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - A crew member of an Egyptian merchant ship has died in northern Brazil, almost certainly from anthrax, after opening a suitcase suspected of containing the substance which he was taking to Canada.
A spokesman for Brazilian federal police in the Amazon state of Para said on Monday an autopsy of the Egyptian man, whom he named as Ibrahim Saved Soliman Ibrahim, showed that he had died after vomiting, internal bleeding and multiple organ failure.
"He was the victim of anthrax," said Castro, adding that police were 90 percent certain that Ibrahim had died of anthrax.
Ibrahim died in the hotel were he was staying on April 11. Several health workers who found his body were taken to a hospital after becoming ill but are now out of danger.
Ibrahim had traveled to Brazil from Cairo to join his ship, the Wabi Alaras, which loaded bauxite in the Amazon to take to Canada.
"We imagine that this is about bioterrorism and Brazil was just used as a point of transfer," said Castro.
Ibrahim died before his ship sailed to Canada, where it was quarantined by authorities last week.
Canada was alerted about the ship through Interpol.
Castro said Ibrahim had been given the suitcase in Cairo by an unidentified person and was due to deliver it to somebody in Canada. But he doubted Ibrahim knew what the content of the bag was otherwise he most likely would not have opened it.
"He opened it because he was curious," Castro said.
After the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, five people died in still-unsolved anthrax mailings.

He wouldn't have had to.
It's also possible the mission called for someone to simply open and abandon the briefcase in a subway tunnel and just let the stopping and passing trains do the rest- as was done in the subway in Japan.

The article specifically said he was carrying a suitcase full of anthrax. Which article? Where?
I haven't read anything that said the suitcase was full of anthrax.
(Or even, for that matter, that it is established the suitcase contained anthrax.)

Good questions. Also, why such confusion over where he died? Also, besides Shermy's article stating that the Egyptian died in the hotel, it has this additional information:
Ibrahim died in the hotel were he was staying on April 11. Several health workers who found his body were taken to a hospital after becoming ill but are now out of danger.
It's just odd to have such very different stories.

the highly weaponized stuff, like the 2001 stuff sent to Congress, needs a significant development program behind it. Iraq had such a program.

Any of you see this info-heavy site before? Looks familiar. Ask Pokerbuddy if he knows something about it.

Thanks for your post and clarifications, pokerbuddy....it took awhile to load, and I'm perusing it now.

If that is your work on that website, I'm most impressed. Thanks for the link. I also agree with this: it's more important what we hear from Interpol than from Mr. Fowler.

Here's an article from the "Gazeta" in Santarem, the closest city to Porto Trombetas.
http://www.gazetadesantarem.com.br Port Trumpets - Anthrax can have killed immediate Egyptian Bacterium Anthrax can to have been cause of death of immediate (official that it substitutes the commander), Ibrahim Sayed Soliman Ibrahim, of Egyptian origin, on board the ship Wadi Alarab, of flag of Egypt, in Port Trumpets, last day 11, the city of Oriximiná.
The ship arrived at Brazil originating the port of Teneriffe (Spain), with 31 members of the crew to the edge and followed trip for Port Alfred (Canada), with a bauxite shipment, of the Mining River of the North. According to information, Ibrahim embarked in the locality of Fazen-dinha, in Macapá, to relieve another mate that entered in vacation. It travelled of Egypt the São Paulo and there for Macapá.
The ship arrived in Port Trumpets in day 10, and the following day, per the morning received inspection from the agents of the Federal Prescription, Federal Policy and of the Docenave. In the same day, for return of the half day the commander of the ship asked for the presence of the agent of the Docenave and doctors. Looked for for its colleagues pertaining to the crew, Ibrahim was not seen in none of the workstations to the edge.
Its body was found inside of its berth, that was locked. Folloied agent of two nurses of the hospital of Port Trumpets, arriving had evidenced there that Ibrahim already was died. But exactly thus, its body was taken for the hospital, where it gave entered for return of the 15 hours.
After chemical preparation, by the doctors of the hospital, its body was directed for Belém, in that one exactly day, for airmail, for autopsy in the Legal Medical Institute. according to managing of the IML, doctor Malcher Luis, the autopsy examination was still not concluded. The body of immediate Ibrahim continues conserved, in the refrigerator of the IML waiting the conclusion of the examinations, "it had death for septicemia, the etiológico agent still has even so not been identified. Still we are searching, and we do not have forecast for its conclusion ", informed Macher, explaining that this type of examination depends on the culture formation, even so is having celeridade of the laboratories for where they had been led.
"As well as it can be, can not be Anthrax. However a series of factors must be led in account ", emphasized. What it raised the suspicion, for the gravity of the situation, was the determination of the Federal Policy, in Pará, to suspend the inspections in other ships, anchored to the plaza of Port Trumpets, until the arrival of a team of the National Agency of Sanitary Monitoring (Anvisa), for the procedures of routine, with new sanitary inspections, in the anchored ships, even so the federal agents, as much of the PF as of the Federal Prescription, they remain in Port Trumpets. The many occured epidemics in the past in the Brazilian littoral cities, historiadas through registers epidemiologists, indicate the presence of etiológicos agents and of some of its vectors, whose origin points with respect to other continents, in special the African and, in this context, the ships had played a prominence role.
Nowadays still they are detected with frequency, for the sanitary monitoring the occurrences of toxic-infections between members of the crew and passengers of boats and workers of the port areas, provoked for the water or food ingestion contaminated for.causing etiológicos agents of illness. The improvement of the standard of sanitary quality of a port depends on the conjugação of some factors, between them the fulfilment of the institucional paper of the agency of competent public health, as well as of the obligations attributed to the companies administrators and excessively responsible for the diverse areas of the port terminals, increased of the contribution of the involved community.
