The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Baghdad nine that day,
The score stood ninety-five to one, with but one inning more to play.
And then when Basra died at first, and Kirkut did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of Hussein.
A straggling few got up to go in deep despair.
The rest clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast.
They thought, "if only Saddam could but get a whack at that.
We'd put up even money now, with Saddam at the bat."
But Blix preceded Saddam, as did also Villepin;
and the former was a hoodoo, while the latter not quite a man.
So upon that stricken multitude, grim melancholy sat;
for there seemed but little chance of Saddam getting to the bat.
But Blix let drive a single, to the wonderment of all.
And Villepin, the much despised, did all he could to stall.
And when the dust had lifted,
and men saw what had occurred,
there was Blix safe in Stockholm and Villepon giving us the bird.
Then from five thousand diplomats and more rose a yell of enormous heft;
it rumbled through the UN, it rattled on the Left;
it pounded through on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat;
for Saddam, mighty Saddam, was advancing to the bat....

New version of "A Ballad of the Republic" -- Casey at the Bat (1888)
The outlook had been dire for the USA that day
Three thousand dead
the horror of Twin Towers blown away
The evil doers pulled it off
with treachery they planned
A sickly silence came upon the people of the land
So many had the feeling that was deep utter despair
The awful smell that death creates was heavy in the air
They thought revenge must happen quick
they've got to get them back
The group was spread out everywhere
so whom do they attack?
Around the world was hopelessness
Islamists ruled the day
And everywhere that they had gone death followed right away
Upon the grief-filled nation a great shadow had been cast
How hatred could have done this thing
the nation was aghast
But then a spark of hope came through with Rudy standing tall
And Dubya with a megaphone said evil ones would fall
And so with spirits lifted
they had sworn to give their best
America, the greatest land
embarking on a quest
A quarter of a billion with strength and unity
Would show the world of what they're made --- You do not tread on me
A sleeping giant, now awake, gave out a mighty yell
That those who would destroy them soon would face a wrath like hell
There was a purpose in his stride
resolve was in his voice
The man who led the nation said there really was no choice
To keep the freedom that they loved, the nation had to fight
And showing moral clarity
the people knew he's right
Ten billion eyes were on him as he got down to the task
Three billion said they don't approve
but them, he didn't ask
Then while the world was waiting, a tremendous blow was struck
And in their caves, Osama's gang was running out of luck
They felt a mighty weapon that had fallen from the sky
When Daisy Cutters call your name
you soon are gonna die
And when those in Afghanistan were taught their lesson good
There came an awful stench indeed
out West from Hollywood
Saddam Hussein was on the list
the leftist crowd went nuts
Sarrandon, Babs, and Farrell, too
are people without guts
Out in the streets the crowds would scream, "America be damned"
And in the Times and in the Post the leader had been slammed
The spineless Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton had their turns
One spent his time appeasing and for power one still yearns
But both of them still flapped their jaws in public with such rage
Please, God, let lightning strike those two and get them off the stage
"George Bush, the real Nazi" they were screaming in San Fran
But while they're spewing vomit, he continued with his plan
They saw his face so serious
he held up under strain
Determined he would show the world from terror there's no gain
With Tony Blair's stiff upper lip and others by their side
They'd answer for the souls of those three thousand who had died
With Shock and Awe they won the day while Tommy sat there sad
And leftists were disheartened with the worst news they could have
Oh! All around their nation, Iraq's children now can play
Some brave and generous strangers shed their blood to save the day
And somewhere there's a cowboy who will neither gloat nor shout
The haters of America have finally struck out
