You're right to wonder. I know guys whos wife resorted to calling cops at the slightest pretext during an argument. Divide and conquer applies here, and the Gov't is BOSS.

It takes very little to get a guy arrested for domestic violence in Maine, and many unstable or unscrupulous women use this to their advantage, i.e. a tool to screw the guy's life up almost beyond repair. I have seen this happen to two different, innocent men during the past three years.

I guess people just have to be really careful about who they get mixed up with, and run like hell at the first sign of weirdness.
