Follow the two "Click Here" links on the home page, captioned "Spectacular Pictures of US Navy in 2003 War in Iraq" and "Spectacular photographs of US Navy flight operations Gulf War, The War in the Middle East 2001". The first takes you to thumbnails, the second to an excellent essay.

Our aircraft carriers are this nation's phalanxes, at once frightening weapons and symbols of American freedom. Few countries can build such behemoths; fewer still operate them with any degree of efficiency. Germany in its darkest hours never launched a single one. Japan's were long ago sent to the bottom of the Pacific. Russia's attempts resulted in abysmal failure. England has a couple, France one -- in the aggregate all lack the power of a single American carrier. And we have twelve of these colossuses - $5 billion, 80,000-90,000-ton monsters, each home to a crew of 5,000. Their flight decks cover 4.5 acres, and the 70 (and more) planes on each wield more destructive power than do most countries.

I was browsing the web looking for some pictures of US aircraft carriers when I came across this web site. It's not news, but highly recommended browsing for all Freepers.

If you speaker volume is high it might be a good idea to turn it down prior to clicking on that link.

If you ever have the chance to go on one of these air craft carrier-museums in person, do it because it is fascinating. I have never been on the USS Yorktown but I have been on the USS Hornet docked at the former naval air station in Alameda (near Oakland)and the USS Intrepid in New York . These are both Essex-class carriers, just like the Yorktown (CV-10).

Also, if you are interested in pictures, go to navy.mil and you can follow the pictures from around the fleet, it is updated about once per week. You can also learn about the history of carriers (or other ship types)and learn about the specific history/fate of each carrier from the USS Langley (hull #1) through the USS George H.W. Bush (hull # 77)

Thanks for the tip, site bookmarked now. I've never been on a carrier, but I have been on the WW2 sub (USS Palomino?) that's in San Francisco. Fascinating, as you say.
