Sentence handed down to school worker who had sex with student
By The Associated Press
(4/25/03 - HOUSTON) A 27-year-old female supervisor at a suburban church school was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail and fined $500 for having sex with a teen student.
Lisa Zuniga, who became pregnant as a result and gave birth to a girl in February, had pleaded guilty to an aggravated sexual assault of a child charge in January.
Zuniga worked at the Victory Academy, which is a church and a private school in the Houston suburb of Pasadena. The student, who was 13 at the time, attended classes at the academy. Zuniga lived on the school grounds, in an apartment where police believe she and the boy had sex. She was arrested by police in November.
Authorities said the affair lasted from April through October of last year.
She also received 10 years' probation. Other conditions of her sentencing included submitting to drug and psychological testing, paying for the student's psychological counseling and submitting to DNA testing to determine if the boy is the father of her newborn.
Zuniga must also register as a sex offender and agree to have no contact with her former student.
Harris County prosecutor Denise Oncken said Zuniga's gender probably played some part in the sentence she received.
"She has a boatload of conditions on her as placed by the court. It will be interesting to see if she can adhere to all of those conditions," Oncken said.
Zuniga's attorney Arthur Parras said he was overjoyed with the sentence.
"I believe the law works fairly to both men and women," he said. "Each case has to be taken on its own merits. Certainly in this case you saw the results. The court seriously considered the Christian people who recommended probation for her."
The boy, who is now 14 years old, moved with his family to Oklahoma.
2. She is not supposed to see this "young man" even if he is the father of the child? So... anyone care to predict what kind of problems the child will have? "Well, no, I've never seen Mom and Dad at the same time. It's the law."
"...The court seriously considered the Christian people who recommended probation for her."
Let's not forget the hypocracy of nominal Christians who would have called for cutting off the cajones of a man who got a girl pregnant in their religious school. This "turn the other cheek" crap is OK if it's your own cheek we're talking about!
Life's a bitch ain't it?
