I have to say, if the Iraqis were stupid enough to attack on the basis of being insulted, then they certainly deserved whatever they got.

Agreed, Ivan. The Iraqis are better off without these idiots in the gene pool. Explains to me why they still live in the 14th Century.
Rummy looks like a genius.
Hats off to special forces....a good line of work for adrenaline junkies. Amazing.

I can't help but be reminded of John Cleese's French soldier character in Monty Python & the Holy Grail. He's on the wall shouting down "Yer motherrrr was a hamsterrr and yer fatherrr smelled of elderberrries! I faahrt in yer zheneral direction!

I don't believe this. Maybe a few fools in the early going took the bait, but you know those Arabs. They're not terribly brave once they realize they'll get blown up without blowing any enemies up in the process.

Through enormous loudspeakers mounted on their humvees, troops broadcast messages proclaiming that Iraqi men were impotent. The insult had been carefully chosen to so enrage Iraqi troops that they could not resist rushing from their defensive positions to attack the American troops in open battle, with terrible consequences.
TLB, did you devise this strategy for our military forces?

"flooded earth" policy... launch the ground war 36 hours ahead of schedule... allied signal intelligence... "Speed kills the enemy"
good stuff.

Inside the capital itself, CIA and small groups of secret military troops scouted targets, acting as pathfinders to the circling bombers overhead. When Saddam appeared to be filmed strolling the streets of his capital in an act of bravado, CIA agents were quick to identify the streets as being part of the Mansour residential district. The area was quickly flooded with agents, searching for fresh information on Saddams possible location. Sure enough, that brought information suggesting that Saddam was holed up in a private house in the city. Within an hour that house had been flattened by a brace of 2,000lb bunker busting bombs. This was joined-up warfare for the 21st century.
Oooh, I was
hoping somebody was alert enough to figure out exactly where that scene was taped. IIRC that was the day the troops were making their first runs into Baghdad, and I was hoping a unit with an embed would get sent to that spot to film a live spot from there. But using the info instead to figure out where to call in the airstrike later on worked too. :-)

Special forces teams, many composed either of American Arabs or Hispanics disguised to look like Arabs, moved into Iraq.Kudos to our loyal SFs of Arab parentage. I have been suspicious and critical of those in the military, but they have earned my repect and gratitude.
Their story needs to be told, just as the story of the loyal and fierce-fighting of the Japanese-parentage American troops during WWII.

Quite a contrast with the previous administration where SpecOps soldiers were used as waiters....
