When oppressed peoples are suddenly released from fear and oppression, all suppressed emotions boil over.
I remember reading of American colonial backwoods revivals as the only social event for emotional outlet those isolated & hard pressed for survival frontier peoples had. When whipped into a frenzy by a some itinerate preacher they went wild, and I mean wild.
Observers often reported that when rolling on the ground in religious fervor, total strangers would suddenly begin copulating en masse at these gatherings.

Sounds like the lead story in the
Frontier Enquirer.
Even if there is a scintilla of truth in the observers' reports, the "religious fervor" would be exactly that type of carnal sensuality the apostle Paul condemned as being antithetical to true Christianity (1 Corinthians 5-6, among other passages).
