TORONTO (CP) -- Placer Dome Inc., Canada's second-biggest gold producer being Barrick Gold, says concerns about SARS have prompted the Vancouver-based firm's senior executives to avoid travelling to Toronto next week for the annual shareholders meeting.
The executives will take part by video-conference, the company said Thursday, citing "current health concerns over SARS, including the World Health Organization travel advisory to postpone non-essential travel to Toronto."
The annual meeting will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET in Toronto's Royal York Hotel.
Placer Dome CEO Jay Taylor will give a speech by video and he and other senior managers will take questions from shareholders who attend. The meeting, to be attended by Toronto-area company officials, will also be webcast.
The gold miner's decision (TSX:PDG) follows similar moves by other firms to prevent the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome.
For example, Montreal-based Alcan Inc. has taken stringent measures to prevent workers in its facilities from being contaminated by SARS.
Employees and visitors from affected countries, including Canada, are excluded from entering Alcan plants in other countries, and Montreal head office employees were discouraged from coming to Thursday's annual meeting.

Picture a stockholder meeting with all the bigwigs appearing as talking heads on TV monitors. I wonder how many stockholders will attend the meeting?
