If I recall correctly, gerunds are verb-like words ending in '-ing' that are being employed as nouns, e.g., "the questioning of the witness."

A gerund is a participial form of a verb used as a noun. The most common gerund is the use of the present participle (-ing), as in 'Jogging is a bore.', but any participle might be employed as a gerund, in conformance with other grammatical considerations.
