What would the resulting countries, the USA and the CSA, look like today? Interesting to ponder.

You and I might be the only ones who would like to ponder that one. It is an interesting thought.

No one supports slavery - we always have to make that disclaimer if you are from the South - but why if the South was so inherently evil and so ignorant, and had the right to secede (Lincoln said so), and slavery was legal - didn't they let them go. If I had a member of my family that was just rotten to the core, but legal, and they wanted to leave - I would hold the door for them.

Gee, to your wife there are only two kinds of people from north of the Mason/Dixon....and neither is American...just a yankee or a northener? What kind of sense does that make?

They are characterized by obnoxious self righteousness, arrogance, a belief that they are better than the rest of us, a strong penchant for ordering other people around, and a tendency to look down upon those who get in their way. In short, a Hillary Clinton.

Describes you perfectly. LOL

Maybe it's just you and your family that feel that way? I'm a Northerner from NYC that spent 8 wonderful years living in the south. Most people there couldn't have been nicer and I made great friends . Ps. I don't think they were just pretending to be nice.

WEll, I believe the poster said we WERE too nice to say so - remember? We are nice folks - but yes, there is a certain 'tightening' that occurs when we hear some 'nawthurners' speak. It is just instinctive and comes from years of being derided and make fun of by those folks who are aptly described in the article as 'yankees'. After we get to know you, if you are good folk, it's not so bad. Usually though, we do make some attempt at teaching you to speak properly.

I remember a time when my husband was in the military, (late 50's) and for a couple of years after, we met plenty (for me) 'yankees' per the description and many, not all, thought all folks from the South were ignorant, uneducated, backward. It was just their absolute ingrained belief - before they left Texas many had been won over - one way or another. There's kindness and graciousness, assimilation (marrying one of those TExas girls) or if necessary, - other ways.

I'm curious - what did Mark Spitz and Uri Geller have to do with it?

Well well...if it isn't FR's favorite psychopath, ole #3. Let me guess - you are responding to me because I "pinged" you hear by mentally thinking your name several weeks ago, even though you just responded to me on your own and without any reason given by me to solicity a response from you.

Needless to say, I have no interest in getting into another debate with you about the meaning of is. Your exploits in the other threads have left you without any arms, Black Knight. Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

What no one ever mentions in the north south debate is that abolutionist were calling for the dissolution of the union prior to the Civil War. They felt that if the fed. government was going to compromise for any form of slavery that it would be more morale to just kick out the offending states.

Actually, those Yankees used to live in North Carolina, but lost their IT jobs in the past few years. We have a saying about Yankees: "Move here, lose your job, lose your family, get lost and leave your money behind." And they have!

Speaking of the movie, "The Outlaw Jose Wales", remember the Union officer that Wales' troops were trying to surrender to?

He was a Yankee. I was thinking about him in that movie as I read this piece. Before he had Wales' troops gunned down, he said something like - "the war will never be over, we can never stop doing good." Something like this.

Anyone remember the exact words?

Well maam, I did have to learn to speak much slower and to pronounce my "R"'s just to be understood down there. After being back in NY for 17 years now, I will admit to sliding back to my NYese.

I haven't lost my love for that wonderful southern word "ya'll" though.

I see you're back to your 24/7-Hate-Lincoln-and-the-North-threads. You are one-issue.

Let me guess - you are responding to me because I "pinged" you hear by mentally thinking your name several weeks ago, even though you just responded to me on your own and without any reason given by me to solicity a response from you.

No, you know there is a "Latest posts" page where threads get bumped to the top, don't you? Well, you may not know that, you probably just get referenced to the hate-Lincoln threads and don't bother with "latest posts".

Needless to say, I have no interest in getting into another debate with you about the meaning of is. Your exploits in the other threads have left you without any arms, Black Knight. Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

I was reading down this thread and when I got to your post I could tell it was by a neo-Confederate and I thought "how hypocritical!", and sure enough, it was by you, mister 24/7 flame war himself. Have you ever posted extensively on a thread without getting in a flame war? That would take some time find one. LOL

"...this theme has always fascinated me."

Bernard Bailyn's 'The Ideological Foundations of the American Revolution' is a good primer in the field.

That has got to be the best thoughtout and well made article I have read all month.

Now if only we could get a Conservative Radio Station to pick it up.

Red leg...red beard.

I remember Josey's traitor commander. I thought Josey ought to have shot him too....and then spit.

Have you ever posted extensively on a thread without getting in a flame war?

....this coming from a guy who has gotten into hundred-post rants about the meaning of "is" as it pertains to NASCAR. Go figure.

You have no arms or legs, Black Knight, yet you persist at biting kneecaps and claiming that you are winning. Now go away or I will taunt you some more.
