We need a law that will reign in diplomatic meddling by ex-presidents. Often as not, these people are the political opponents of those who follow them, and we really don't need this. We don't need more than one president at a time, or more than one person purporting to speak on behalf of the United States during foreign policy crises. This behavior should be a felony offense. It should be punishable by lengthy imprisonment. What Clinton is doing here could get people killed. It may have already gotten people killed. It is a threat to our troops, to our overseas personnel, and to the safety of the people of the United States. Clinton and Carter are grandstanding jackasses who violate every norm of protocol and decency observed by ex-presidents for 200 years. They are a disgrace to their party and to themselves. But worse than that, they are dangerous. There is no telling what misunderstanding could occur as a consequence of some foreign leader relying on the represenations of a "president" who is no longer in the loop. This has to stop. If these two scumbuckets cannot keep their meddling hands off the tiller of state voluntarily, then we must take steps in law to forcibly restrain them. |
This isn't the first time Blair has consulted with Clinton about the U.N. since Bush took office. (See post #104). Unfortunately, it takes two to tango, and Blair apparently still has Clinton on his diplomatic dance card.
Blair is to be commended for backing up the U.S., but he also has his own political aims, not least of which is battling Chirac for control of the EU, and possibly exerting influence over Bush on other issues in return for Britain's support in Iraq.
