Would it be possible for someone to translate this into English for those of us nerds who aren't computer nerds?

Korn: The more I know about the WIN32 API the more I dislike it. It is complex and for the most part poorly designed, inconsistent, and poorly documented.

A suggestion next time, give us a geek translation, like what is a 'Korn Shell'. And if you want more responses, you might want to think about posting this to a more tech orientated forum like Slashdot.org

There are many people who use UNIX or Linux who IMHO do not understand UNIX. UNIX is not just an operating system, it is a way of doing things, and the shell plays a key role by providing the glue that makes it work. The UNIX methodology relies heavily on reuse of a set of tools rather than on building monolithic applications. I have noticed this too. For example, the RH Linux install tool rpm is (so I've been told, without looking at the src --OK i'm lazy so sue me--, but conceptually true anyway) is a glorified cpio. Especially folks who go from nothing directly to Linux seem to have a Linux-centric view of the world, as if nothing else exists or is of any value at all or matters in the least. It matters because often the copycats get it wrong and bugs and other inconveniences inevitably crop up that could have been avoided by tool reuse-- which is or should be something like tool #0 in everyone's bag of tricks, for just these kinds of reasons. Instead one gets these somewhat monolithic megatools, delivered with a less than modest certainty that they are exactly what everyone needs at the utility level...
As for shell I've never figured out how to get friendlier service from anything besides Tenex csh (tcsh). All sh variants have a habit of driving me to frustration sooner or later. ksh does make a really convenient script language, however, and it's interesting to learn (fooey on me) that this was its original purpose. At least now I can feel less guilty about using tcsh and friends.
