I agree. in the A-10 the designers returned to the principles laid down for WWII fighters: ruggedness, reliability, heavily armored, and long endurance. The Air Force wants dogfighters that can attack ground units occasionally. The A-10 defends ground units well, with a nod to air combat by carrying Sidewinders.
In future combat their will be greater need for close air support than air superiority.
I know if I were on the ground I would rather see an A-10 than an F-16 overhead.
