there is always various types of mssionary work there.....even if you aren't super involved or knowledgeable in the religious sense, all sorts of support people are needed on the mission field.

Yes, I explored that avenue, too... I'm both "involved" and "knowledgeable in the religious sense," and I had a commercial pilot's license, so there was a lot of interest from several organizations. I've preached some, and taught a long-running class that involved doing my own translation of about half the NT...

All of those organizations, though, required that I raise my own support (most of them were pretty crass about it, too, wanting 2x what it would cost to keep me in the field), and (1) I'm not good at asking people for money, and (2) their attitude turned me off to the whole missionary approach. I know there are good outfits doing the Lord's work, but the ones I dealt with seemed more interested in raising their "administrative costs" than spreading the Word...

Thanks for you sharing.

I am also involved re: church. Actually I am an ordained minister! Last full time work was as a hospital chaplain in Houston. I worked with AIDS & cancer patients. was on staff at teaching hospital & also worked w/hospice.

I would like to go to possibly central america or the Islands full time as missionary when my mom dies. (but, hey, she may outlive me!)

Will be away for about 10 minutes.. need to reboot & do a few things before 6 AM conference.

I also have NOT slept yet .. so will get some wine & try to clear my mind a bit..

Wow, it's 4:30 here...

Mama just woke up and asked me to come rub her back (how can I decline?), and I've got to get some work done tomorrow/today, to pay some bills!

Enjoyed it (took a couple of days off from the thread, but read it all!)...
