BERNADETTE Chirac, wife of the French president, Jacques Chirac, has been accused in court of illegally taking a 17th century rug from Paris city hall to the Elysée Palace.
The accusation was made by the Association of Jews Despoiled during the War which brought a lawsuit against Mrs Chirac, saying she illegally removed the rug from the city hall, where her husband was mayor, and took it with her when he became president.
The association said Mrs Chirac should face thousands of euros in fines. The organisation says the rug was looted by the Nazis from a Jewish family during the occupation of France during the Second World War.
" She probably just thought [the rug] looked nice and wanted it for the presidential palace," said Jean-David Leibovic, head of the association. "I want to think she didnt know."
Mrs Chiracs lawyers argued that the whole affair is an unfortunate mix-up and pressed for the case to be dismissed.

I am not sure whether to laugh or be disgusted. I'll settle on both.

Mrs Chiracs lawyers argued that the whole affair is an unfortunate mix-up and pressed for the case to be dismissed. That excuse does sound a little familiar.

They need to check for the silverware too.....

" She probably just thought [the rug] looked nice and wanted it for the presidential palace," said Jean-David Leibovic, head of the association. "I want to think she didnt know."Yeah, and Hillary just thought that all of that furniture and odds and ends were housewarming gifts for the taking.
Those people see something crooked in W just taking a breath and fiddle around for excuses when a real theft is under their noses.

Oh here is a suggestion .. then why not just ask if it could be placed in the presidential palace instead of stealing it?

Ivan, this is another disgusting example of how people who hold elected office and their families, feel they are a privileged class exempt from the rules that govern you and me. This is rightfully in the same class of offeneses as the Clintons. This gross sense of entitlement disgusts me. The antisemitism only makes the point more poignant.

Imelda Marcos disgusted me, but she had impeccable taste in shoes!Yes, she did, for a woman with short, fat feet. :)
I wonder if Madame Chirac finally realized that swiping a rug from the Paris city hall isn't chic. Let's hope she didn't roam through the Louvre with a shopping basket.
